Raised in St. Andrew, Jamaica, before migrating to the United States, Nyamekye Edwards has always been fond of writing and storytelling. Nyamekye began pursuing writing during high school with the aid of her English teacher, Henry Martinez, who provided her specialized prompts for short stories and poetry. Mr. Martinez encouraged her to enter the Binghamton Poetry competition her 11th grade year of high school. While she did not place in the top three, she was motivated to develop her craft. She then began working with David Paulino who assisted her with expanding her knowledge of poetry in terms of genre, types of poetry and writing style. But it wasn’t until she met her creative writing professor, Will Ryan, at Hampshire College that she began believing in herself enough to study the work of poets such as Sylvia Plath, Emily Dickinson and Maya Angelou. She coupled the artistry of these great female poets with her love for music, and the artistry of musicians such as Amy Winehouse, Lana Del Rey and Rihanna, to create lyrical and emotionally driven work.
